Official Language of Florida

In 1513 Juan Ponce de Leon landed in Florida, and began the European History of this State. Spain was not alone in her interest in this land. In 1562, Jean Ribault explored parts of what is now Florida on behalf of France. Fort Caroline at the mouth of the St. Johns River, near present-day Jacksonville, was founded by Frenchman Reno Goulaine de Laudonniore. In 1565, Spain's Pedro Menéndez de Avilés settled at a place he called San Augustín (St. Augustine) and established the first permanent European settlement.

San Augustín is the first settlement not only in Florida but in the USA. This makes Spanish the First Official Government Language of Florida. Though French is still a strong contender for Official Status. The use of French as a Trade Language among First Nation peoples and European buyers gives it a longer history. It was after the War of 1812 that Spain succeeded her Territory of Florida to the USA. This ended all Official Language rules and opened the state to a diversity of Religions, Ethnicities and Ideology.

For those who think the time has come for the USA to have an Official Government Language, please keep in mind the diversity of Founding Languages that made this Nation possible. I do not speak Spanish, but if it somehow came to be that Florida had to choose an Official Language I would have to support it being Spanish again.
